Captain America: Civil War - Short Analysis
The average movie goer may watch Captain America: Civil War and think this action-packed movie
is awesome. In fact, this movie is pretty awesome. There are some great fight scenes in this movie and a great cast of characters to include one, in particular, many have been waiting to see on the big screen: Black Panther. We, those of us who follow the character Black Panther, are looking forward to seeing more of him on the big screen. But what hidden meaning or message can we discover in this movie? What will many walk away thinking?
Movies are typically couched in reality. If fact, movies must be anchored, to some degree, in reality for the magic of belief suspension to take place. So what reality is this movie anchored in? War - but not necessarily the complexities of war. Rather the politics of war and the hypocritical nature of the governments who wage and participate in war.
The very people the Avengers swear to protect end up being the very same people the Avengers end up hurting and even killing. No war fought in the midst of innocent people takes place without some degree of collateral damage.
The reality is men and women are hauled off to fight wars in countries for political reasons disguised as humanitarian in one sense and patriotic in another sense, and yet the people who suffer regardless of the aim of any of those involved are the innocent who unwillingly become some foreign nation's collateral damage.
In this movie, the villain is a man seeking revenge for lives lost: his family - collateral damage. Movies, of course, can have more than one antagonist and in this movie, the real villain turns out to be the very same people hailed as heroes.
The message you should walk away with after seeing this movie is simply: your politics, when levied at the end of a barrel, leave innocent people to live the lives of martyrdom.
